Home helper verification checklist
Understand identity, employment and criminal-verification checks before hiring someone for household work.
Start with identity and contact details
Confirm that names and contact details are consistent across the information provided. Handle personal documents securely and collect only what is necessary for the stated purpose.
- ✓ Name and current contact
- ✓ Current address information
- ✓ Emergency contact
- ✓ Consent for relevant checks
Check employment information
Where possible, contact a previous employer using independently confirmed details. Ask about the role and dates rather than requesting unnecessary personal information.
Use criminal checks appropriately
Follow the applicable process and obtain consent. Treat a report as one input into a wider hiring decision, not as a guarantee of future behaviour or job performance.
Review and store information safely
Limit access to verification documents, avoid forwarding them casually and delete information when there is no longer a legitimate reason to retain it.
